Background of the Study
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition triggered by exposure to traumatic events, including combat, natural disasters, or serious accidents (Ogunbayo et al., 2024). In military settings, PTSD is particularly prevalent among service members who experience combat or other traumatic events during their service. Military hospitals in Nigeria, such as those catering to veterans and active service members, play a critical role in diagnosing, managing, and treating PTSD (Dike et al., 2023). Nurses, as essential healthcare providers, are often the first to interact with patients and are pivotal in the identification, support, and management of PTSD symptoms. However, there is limited research on the level of nurses’ awareness of PTSD and their role in managing the disorder within military hospitals in Nigeria. This study seeks to assess nurses' awareness of PTSD, evaluate their management practices, and identify the challenges they face in caring for patients with PTSD in military hospitals.

Statement of the Problem
PTSD is a significant concern in military settings, and failure to identify and manage this condition can lead to prolonged suffering, impaired functioning, and increased suicide risk among military personnel (Abubakar et al., 2024). Inadequate awareness and training among nurses in military hospitals can lead to misdiagnosis, inappropriate treatment, and delays in care. The lack of standardized protocols for the management of PTSD in military hospitals further exacerbates these issues (Dike et al., 2023). This study aims to explore the awareness of nurses regarding PTSD and their practices in managing the condition within military hospitals in Nigeria.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess nurses' awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in military hospitals in Nigeria.
  2. To evaluate the management practices employed by nurses in treating PTSD among military personnel.
  3. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in managing PTSD in military hospitals in Nigeria.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of nurses' awareness of PTSD in military hospitals in Nigeria?
  2. How do nurses in military hospitals manage PTSD in service members and veterans?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in managing PTSD in military hospitals in Nigeria?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses in military hospitals in Nigeria have insufficient awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  2. Nurses' awareness of PTSD significantly influences their management practices for patients with PTSD in military hospitals.
  3. Organizational and resource-related factors significantly influence nurses' ability to manage PTSD in military hospitals.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in military hospitals in Nigeria and their knowledge and management practices regarding PTSD. A limitation is that the study may not account for the full complexity of PTSD management across different healthcare settings, and findings may not be generalizable to civilian hospitals.

Definitions of Terms
